Understanding the meaning and the importance of salvation in Christianity is the key to an eternal inheritance in Christ. Salvation means to be born again and filled with the holy spirit.
Salvation is experiencing a new birth in Christ Jesus. Being born again is a conscious attempt to live according to the ordinances of the scripture. New birth means to abide by the divine guidance of the holy spirit about every aspect of your life.
The salvation of Christ is compulsory for every believer. It is the only way that you can live a purposeful life here on earth and also make it to heaven on the last day.
Today, many Christians underrate the importance of salvation. The concept of new birth likened to a kind of old fashion tradition. According to the requirements of God, salvation is a prerequisite to making heaven. You cannot be a Christian without having the word of God and the holy spirit inside of you.
In this post, you will learn the meaning and importance of salvation. I pray God will give you an understanding of his word. Amen.

What Is Salvation in The Bible Definition
Salvation in the bible means the new birth, which is a starting point of being a Christian. It is letting go of your carnal self and getting filled with the word of God and the holy spirit (1 Peter 1:23).
Understanding Salvation for New Believers
In the scripture in John 3:1-6, Nicodemus, a Jewish leader in the synagogue approached Jesus at night. He inquired on the meaning of salvation.
Jesus explained to him the meaning and importance of salvation means to be born again. Only a person who has salvation can enter the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus knew a grown-up could not be born again from the womb. Jesus had to explain to him that redemption does not refer to physical re-birth. It is a spiritual process of having a fill of the word of God and the holy spirit.
Salvation is the focal point of Christianity. Without the spirit of God, you would become a slave to sin. You would not inherit the kingdom of God as promised in the scripture.
Steps to Salvation
There are four steps to salvation in Christianity. They are;
- Acceptance Phase
- Believing with Your Heart
- Confess with Your Mouth
- Live Christ-Like
Step 1: Acceptance Phase
The first step to salvation is to acknowledge that you need the spirit of God in your life.
The acceptance stage of salvation is the step where you agree that you want the holy spirit inside of you.
Without the personal conviction of accepting Christ, you cannot be born again.
Step 2: Believing with Your Heart
The second step of salvation is to believe in your heart that the blood of Jesus can wash away your infirmities.
At this stage, you believe in your heart that you can achieve a new life in Christ. Having complete trust in the word of God and holy spirit is a necessary step for salvation.
Step 3: Confess with Your Mouth
Confessing with your mouth is the third step of salvation. At this phase, you profess with your mouth the prayer of salvation. Salvation is not only resolving you want to follow Christ. It involves verbal proclamation. The scripture in Romans 10:10 says that it is with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Prayer of Salvation
Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that you died on the cross of Calvary for my sins. It is you who can give me a good life and eternal inheritance. Thus, I confess my sins to you at this moment. Come into my life and be my saviour. I want the holy spirit to dwell in him. Give me the grace to study and meditate on the word of God.
I pray for salvation in Jesus name. Amen.
Step 4: Live Christ-like
The final step to salvation is to live Christ-like. It means to live according to the ordinances of the scripture. At this point, people must be able to see the reflection of the word of God through you. Salvation is a practical demonstration of Jesus lifestyle.
Being born again requires you to do away with certain bad habits. Lifestyles that are not pleasing and acceptable to God. In simple terms, you have to do away with your old man and wear a new garment of righteousness.
New birth entails living according to divine guidance. You would now need to seek to obey the directives of God in every decision in your daily activities. Total salvation means to surrender your life to God.
Objective Earthly Benefits of Salvation
There are objective earthly benefits of salvation.
- Divine Guidance
- Divine Prosperity
- Blessings of Soul Winning
Divine Guidance
Divine guidance is having access to the leading of the holy spirit in your daily decision making. The instructions of Christ can only get to you when you have the presence of God inside of you.
The importance of divine guidance is that you would be able to avoid mistakes in life. Also, the ability to live in divine guidance is key to fulfilling your purpose here on earth.
Divine Prosperity
Divine prosperity is an objective earthly benefit of salvation. The scripture in Philippians 4:19 says that God would fulfil your heart desires. When you are with Jesus, you will not experience a lack in any aspect of your life.
Blessings of Soul Winning
Soul winning is the heartbeat of God. Believers must win souls for Christ. In soul winning, you preach the word of God to people who are yet to give their lives to Christ. By so doing, you become the light to those in your immediate environment and the world at large. Soul-winning gives you possession of the benefits of salvation.
Importance of Salvation in Christianity
- Master to Sin
- Eternal Inheritance of the Kingdom of God
- Become a Friend of God
Master to Sin
The importance of salvation is to be a master to sin. In the book of John 8:34-36. Jesus explained the importance of redemption using the son and servant illustration. It is the son, not the servant that abides in the house.
If you want to be live above sin, then you must seek the help of the son who is Jesus Christ. When Jesus sets you free, you would be able to live a sin-free life.
Eternal Inheritance of the Kingdom of God
Eternal inheritance of the kingdom of God is the ultimate purpose of salvation. Christianity is not only about doing the work of God here on earth but also entails to make heaven. When you have Jesus, you inherit the kingdom of God.
Become a Friend of God
Salvation gives Christians the privilege of becoming a friend of God. Salvation is the only way to build a friendship with God.
In the book of James 2:23, Abraham is a friend of God because he upheld the righteousness of God. Moses and David are also friends of God described in the scripture.
Two Types of Salvation in Christianity
There are two types of salvation in Christianity. They are;
- Insincere Salvation
- Genuine Salvation
Insincere Salvation
Insincere salvation is a type of redemption. It occurs when a person does not completely surrender to God.
As a Christian, you cannot be either hot or cold. People who try to play around Christianity are not born again.
Genuine Salvation
Genuine salvation is total surrender to the will of God. It is when you decide to do away with your old nature and allow the spirit and word of God to penetrate your heart. It is through salvation that you can inherit the kingdom of God.
How to Explain Salvation to A Child
Explaining salvation to a child is a bit technical. Children may not be able to grasp the biblical concepts and implication of salvation.
The preferred method on how to explain salvation to a child is to tell them stories of your journey of being a Christian.
Also, it is necessary to tell them about the impact of the love of Christ in John 3:16. Make an illustration about how God so loves us to have sent his only son to redeem humanity. It is like a kid giving up his favourite toy to make another kid happy. It is not an easy decision for kids.
Jesus loves little children and wants the best for them. He befriends who are obedient to their parents and do good to all those around them.
How to Explain Salvation to an Unbeliever
The best way on how to explain salvation to an unbeliever is a practical demonstration of the love of God. They need to be able to spot something unique in you as the preacher.
Preach to unbelievers by sharing your experience of salvation. You must never rebuke unbelievers and throw threats at them. The word of God is love.
Patience is the key to draw unbelievers to Christ. Using the scripture in John 3:16 to emphasize the love of God is a good strategy for preaching to unbelievers. Unbelievers must understand the implications of operating outside the word of God.
Another effective way to preach to unbelievers is to pray for them. Ask God to touch their hearts so that the word of God you would preach would touch their hearts.
Believers must be aware that being a Christian would not hurt their lives. They would enjoy divine ability and be at the top.
