1. MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants with the qualifications in the underlisted categories shall be eligible for admission
into the postgraduate programmes; however, candidates must also fulfill the matriculation requirements of Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt as stated below:-
i) All candidates must possess the minimum of five ordinary level credit passes which must include English Language and Mathematics.
A. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS
- Holders of at least a Third Class Degree in the subject area applied for or a Second Class (Lower Division) degree in a related discipline, obtained from the Rivers State University or any other recognized institution of equivalent status.
- Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least lower credit classification or its equivalent in a related discipline, obtained from a recognized institution. Holders of HND (Lower Credit) with a minimum of five (5) years post-qualification relevant experience may be considered in Engineering.
- For Faculty of Engineering, candidates must be holders of at least a Third Class degree in Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Candidates for PGD in the Department of Electrical Engineering must be holders of a B.Sc.
or B.Tech. Degree with third class in Electrical or Computer Engineering; Physics with Electronics or Computer Science.
- Candidates for PGD programme in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering must be holders of at least a third class Degree of B.Sc., B.Eng., or B.Tech or a holder of a minimum of Upper Credit in the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural and Environmental Engineering or in related Engineering Discipline, such as Civil, Mechanical, and Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Candidates for PGD in the Department of Marine Engineering must be holders of a Second Class degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering; Third Class degree in Marine Engineering and Upper Credit in Higher National Certificate in Marine or Mechanical Engineering.
- Candidates for PGD in Surveying and Geomatics must be holders of either:
- Third Class B.Sc/B.Tech degree in Surveying;
- B.Sc/B.Tech in disciplines cognate to Surveying and Geomatics, such as
Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Geography (with Mathematics Courses), etc., obtained from Rivers State University or any other recognized University;
- Higher National Diploma (HND, Upper Credit minimum) from a recognized institution may also be considered. Holders of HND (Lower Credit) with a minimum of five (5) years post-qualification relevant experience may be considered. However, such candidates must enroll for and pass prescribed remedial courses in Surveying and Geomatics.
- For the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) the following categories of candidates are eligible.
- Candidates with minimum of third class at the first degree in any discipline from an approved University are eligible for admission.
- HND with credit/Merit passes in relevant teaching subjects awarded by any recognized institution are eligible for admission.
- Applicants for the Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Education (PGDTE) must have the following:-
- Third Class degree in any Technical discipline awarded by a recognized
University.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent in any Technical subject awarded by any recognized institution.
- Applicants for the PGD in Social Studies must possess:-
(a) A good Bachelor’s degree or HND Upper Credit in cognate discipline (such as Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Law, Language, Literature, Religion, History, etc.) other than Social Science will be required to have a CGPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale
(xi) For Department of English Language and Literature in English, Candidates will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from a department other than English Language and Literature in English will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
(b) Applicants for admission into PGD in the Department of French will be required to meet the following conditions:
i. Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class. ii. Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is in a department other than French will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
iii. HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
- Applicants for admission into PGD in the Department of History and International Diplomacy will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from a department other than History and International Diplomacy will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
- Applicants for admission into PGD in Philosophy will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Law, Language, Literature, Religion, History, etc. other than Philosophy will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
- Applicants for admission into PGD in Religious and Cultural Studies will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from any department other than Religious and Cultural Studies will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
- Applicants for admission into PGD in Theatre Arts will be required to meet the following conditions:
- Possess a relevant Bachelor’s degree of the Rivers State University or any other recognized university with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from any department other than Theatre Arts will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
Xii Applicants for the PGD in Local Government Administration must possess:
(a) A relevant Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, Sociology of the Rivers State University or any other recognized University with at least a Third Class.
- Candidates whose Bachelor’s degree is from disciplines such as Law, English Language, Literature, Education, Religion, History etc, will be required to have a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale.
- HND holders with a minimum of lower credit from recognized institutions may also be considered.
Xiii Applicants for the PGD in Public Administration will require the following:
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree not lower than Third Class Division from recognized universities.
- Bachelor’s degrees with at least Second Class Lower Division in areas not related to Administration may be considered.
- HND holders with Upper Credit from recognized Institution may also be considered.
Xiv Applicants for PGD in Peace, Conflict and Security Studies will require the following:
- Relevant Bachelor’s degrees not lower than Third Class Division from recognized Universities.
- Bachelor’s degrees with at least Second Class Lower Division in areas not related to Peace Studies may be considered.
- HND at Lower Credit level may also be considered.
- Relevant professional qualifications may also be considered.
Xv Applicants for PGD in Economics will require the following:
A Third Class degree in the related area or a Second Class Lower Division degree in a related discipline obtained from the Rivers State University or any other recognized Institution of equivalent status:
a) Candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Demographic studies and other related quantitative courses.
xvi) Applicants for the PGD in Transport Planning and PGD in Supply Chain and Logistics Planning must possess the following:
B.Sc./B.Tech. Third Class minimum from Rivers State University or any other recognized University in relevant disciplines such as Urban and Regional Planning, Transport Management, Marine Engineering, Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, etc.
- HND or its equivalent with at least an Upper Credit.
- Holders of recognized professional qualifications in Logistics/Transport, such as Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT); Institute of Transport Engineers; Institute of Transport Administration and others, with at least 5 years working experience in a transport or related organization.
- Applicants for the PGD in Environmental Management and Control OR PGD in
Disaster/Environmental Risk Management must
possess the following:
- Third Class degree in Natural or Applied Sciences, Medical Science, Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Geography.
- HND Upper Credit minimum or its equivalent in Natural or Applied Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Geography from recognized higher institutions may also be considered.
- Applicants for the PGD in Applied Statistics must possess the following:-
- Third Class Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or related discipline from a recognized university.
- Holders of Higher National Diploma in Statistics or related discipline with a minimum of Upper Credit from a recognized institution may be considered for admission.
- In addition, a candidate must satisfy the minimum entry requirement for admission into a Bachelor’s degree in the Department of Mathematics of Rivers State University i.e. a minimum of five O’Level credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Physics. The other subjects shall include Chemistry, Biology and other relevant subjects (Economics, Statistics, Further Mathematics).
- Applicants for the PGD in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences must possess the following:-
- Candidates for PGD in the department of human Anatomy must be holders of second class degree or pass class degree of Rivers State University or other University recognized by statute of Rivers State University, in non-classified programmes, with a minimum CGPA of less than 3.0 on a 5.0 grade points scale or its equivalent in Human Anatomy or related discipline.
- Graduates of other disciplines of Rivers State University or other institutions recognized by statute of Rivers State University with a Second Class or third class degree in nonclassified programmes can apply for PGD in Human Anatomy.
- Graduates of Anatomy with pass degree on a 5 points scale can apply for PGD in Human Anatomy.
- Candidates for PGD in medical biochemistry must be holders of second class degree or pass degree from Rivers State University or other university recognized by Senate of Rivers State University who possess a minimum of Second Class degree or third class degree for unclassified disciplines or equivalent in Biochemistry or related disciplines.
- Graduates of Biochemistry with pass degree can apply.
- Candidates for PGD in Nursing Science must be holders of third class degree in Nursing Science from Rivers State University or other University recognized by Senate of Rivers State University.
- Registered Nurses who are graduates of other disciplines with a second class lower degree or third class degree on a 5.point scale or its equivalent can apply for PGD in Nursing Science.
xx. The criteria for admission into Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science will be as follows:
- Graduate of this University or any other university approved by the university senate who have a third class degree in Library and Information Science or any other discipline.
- Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Science and any other recognized Institution with at least a credit pass.
B. MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES
- A candidate seeking admission into the Full-time/Part-time Master’s degree programme must possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in the relevant discipline.
- For a Master’s degree in the Institute of Education, candidates shall possess a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in the relevant field of study or PGDE/PGDTE obtained from Rivers State University or any other recognized Institution of equivalent status.
- A candidate who holds PGD, PGDE, PGDTE in the relevant discipline or an equivalent Diploma (in Maritime Transport, Marine Engineering or Nautical Studies, Master Mariner, Marine Engineers Class 1) with CGPA of 3.50 or above (on a five-point grade system) may apply for the Master’s Programmes.
- Candidates for M Sc in Surveying and Geomatics must be holders of either:
- BSc/BTech in Surveying and Geomatics degree with at least second Class Lower
Division or equivalent from the Rivers State University or any other approved University;
- BSc degree Second Class Lower minimum in subjects cognate to Surveying such as
Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or Geography (with Mathematics) and, in addition, a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Surveying and Geomatics at a pass level equivalent to the CGPA of 3.0 and above on a 5-point scale obtained from the Rivers State University;
- Higher National Diploma (HND) Upper Credit minimum from a recognized institution may also be considered. Holders of the HND with Lower Credit with a minimum of five (5) years post-qualification relevant experience may be considered. However, such candidates must enroll for and pass prescribed remedial courses in Surveying and Geomatics.
- Candidates for the M.Ed/MSc. degree programmes offered in the Faculty of
Education/Institute of Education should possess
EITHER
A good Bachelor’s degree (not lower than Second Class Lower Division) in a relevant teaching subject
OR
Higher National Diploma or its equivalent with at least lower credit classification in addition to PGDE or PGDTE with a CGPA of 3.50 obtained from this University or any other recognized institution.
- Candidates for the Masters Programme (M.A) in English Language and Literature in English are required to possess any of the following qualifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in English Language or English Literature or B.A. Education/ English or Linguistics/Communication with a minimum of a Second Class (Lower Division) from any recognized university.
- A PGD at Upper Credit Level in Communication, Linguistics or English Language from the Faculty or any other recognized university.
- Candidates for the Masters Programme (M.A) in French are required to satisfy the following admission requirements:
- A good Bachelor’s Degree in French and from any recognized university, with at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- A PGD at Upper Credit Level in French from the Faculty or a recognized university.
- Candidates for the Masters Programme (M.A) in History and International Diplomacy are required to satisfy the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division in History and
International Diplomacy, History and International Studies, History and Diplomatic Studies, History and International Relations or History and Strategic Studies from approved and recognized universities. ii. PGD in History, Social Studies or Local Government Administration (minimum CGPA of 3.0) from a recognized institution.
- Candidates for the Masters Programme (M.A) in Philosophy are required to satisfy the following:-
- A good Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from any recognized university, with at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- A PGD at Upper Credit Level in Philosophy from the Faculty or a recognized university.
- Candidates for the Masters Programme (M.A) in Religious and Cultural Studies are required to satisfy the following:-
- A Bachelor’s Degree (B.A) in Religious and Cultural Studies with a minimum of a Second Class (Lower Division) from any recognized university.
- A Third Class Division with a PGD in Religious and Cultural Studies with at least a Credit Level Pass.
- Candidates for the Masters Degree Programme (M.A) in Theatre Arts are required to satisfy the following:
a Bachelor’s Degree (B.A) in Theatre Arts, Music, Linguistics and Communication Studies/Mass Communication, English Language and Literature in English or Fine Arts and Design with a minimum of a Second Class (Lower Division) from any recognized university.
i. A Third Class Division with a PGD in Drama and Theatre-related area.
X Candidates for the programme in Social Work and Gender Studies must Possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, History, Public Administration,
Sociology, Anthropology or any other relevant discipline of the Rivers State University or that of any other recognized University with at least a Second Class Lower Division with 3.00 CGPA on a 5-point scale.
- A PGD at Credit Level Pass (i.e. 3.5) in relevant area (such as Social
Studies Political Science, Economics, History, Public Administration, Sociology, Anthropology or any other relevant discipline) from the Institute or a recognized University.
Xi Candidates for the Masters Programme in Local Government Administration must possess:-
- A Relevant Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, History, Public Administration,
Sociology or Anthropology of the Rivers State University or that of any other recognized university with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) with 3.00 CGPA on 5-point scale.
- A PGD at Credit level pass (i.e. 3.5) in relevant area (such area as
Social Studies, Political Science, Economics, History, Public Administration, Sociology or Anthropology) from the Institute or a recognized university.
Xii Candidates for the MA and M Sc in Public Administration are required to satisfy the following:-
- A degree in relevant area from a recognized University with minimum of Second
Class Lower Division may be admitted provided the University Matriculation requirements are satisfied.
- A Postgraduate Diploma at Upper Credit level in relevant area from a recognized university.
Xiii Candidate seeking admission into the Master’s programme in Economics must possess the following:
i) a minimum of Second Class Lower degree in Economics
from a recognized institution whose Economics programme is accredited by NUC.
(ii) Candidates with PGD in Economics from a recognized institution with a CGPA of at least 3.5 on a 5-point scale.
- Candidates for the MSc Transport Planning and M.Sc Supply Chain and Logistics Planning must have a PGD in Transport and Logistics Studies (with a minimum CGPA of
3.0 on a 5-point grade system) or B.Sc./B.Tech. degrees (Second Class Lower minimum) in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, Management Sciences, Environmental Sciences and disciplines related to these.
- Candidates for the Masters in Environmental Management and Control or MSc in
Disaster/Environmental Risk Management require the following:-
- Bachelor’s degree (not below Second Class Lower) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Natural or Applied Science based subject, Agriculture, Geology, Medical Science or Technology/Engineering and Geography.
- PGD in Environmental Management and Control with a minimum of Merit/Pass (i.e. 3.0 – 3.49 on a 5.0 scale).
xvi) Candidates seeking admission into MSc Environmental Management should possess:-
- A minimum of Second Class Lower Division Bachelor’s Honours degree or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geophysics, Geodesy, Meteorology, Mathematics, Hydrology, Engineering, Architecture, Town and Country Planning, Geography, Agriculture, Land Surveying, Computer Science or equivalent acceptable to the Senate of the university for admission into a Master’s programme.
- Second Class Lower Division Bachelor’s Honours degree in Environmental Management or Environmental Sciences related courses.
- PGD at credit level pass (i.e. 3.5 of 5.0 scale) or 60% on weighted percentage average.
NOTE FOR ENGINEERING
xvii) The criteria for admission into the Master’s degree in Engineering are as follows:
- The candidate must have B.Tech, B.Sc, or B.Eng degree in Engineering disciplines with at least a Second Class Lower Division grade.
- A candidate with an upper credit Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) (minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5- point scale) in Engineering disciplines from a recognized University shall be considered.
- The candidate shall in addition satisfy the University matriculation Examination (UTME) which
includes five O’Level Credit passes including English language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as requirements for admission into the degree programme in Engineering disciplines and provide NYSC Discharge/Exemption/Exclusion Certificate.
- Application for the Programmes are highly competitive and depending on availability of vacancies, there shall be a cut-off CGPA to be determined by the Departmental Postgraduate Board.
- The M.Tech programme is available to first degree graduates in Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural and Environmental Engineering or other related Engineering fields such as Civil and Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering for (Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Option),Mechanical Engineering for (Farm Power and Machinery Engineering Option) from a recognized institution, with at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- For admission into the M. Tech programme in Chem/Pet Engineering, a candidate must have:
B. Tech, B. Sc, or B.Eng. degree in Chemical, Chemical/Petrochemical or Polymer Engineering with at least a Second Class Lower Division grade;
- PGD (minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale) in Chemical, Chemical/Petrochemical
Engineering from a recognized university or HND with Upper Credit from a recognized
Institution.
- Candidates for M. Tech in Department of Electrical Engineering, either a First Degree in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering with at least a Second Class Lower Division grade; or
- PGD (minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale) in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Engineering from a recognised university may be considered.
- For admission into the Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Offshore Engineering and Subsea Engineering, the candidate must have B.Tech, B.Sc, or B.Eng degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture with at least a Second Class Lower Division grade.
- For admission into the Master of Technology (M.Tech) programme in
Mechanical Engineering, the candidate must have B.Tech, B.Sc, or B.Eng degree in
Mechanical Engineering with at least a Second Class Lower Division grade
xviii. A candidate seeking admission into the full time / part-time Master’s degree programme must possess a bachelor’s degree with at least second lower division in the relevant discipline.
xix For a Master’s degree in human anatomy, candidate shall possess a Second Class degree with a minimum CGPA of not less than 3.0 on a 5.0 grade point scale or its equivalent in Human Anatomy or related discipline from Rivers State University or other University recognized by statute of River State University.
a) Holders of Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Optometry and other related degrees, who possess postgraduate diploma in Human Anatomy with a minimum CGPA of
3.50 on a 5- Point scale or its equivalent.
- Holders of MBBS, BDS, DVM and Fellowship are qualified for MSc in human anatomy programme.
- Candidates for master’s degree in Biochemistry are required to satisfy the following :
- A good bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Rivers State University or any other university recognized by senate of Rivers State University are eligible to apply.
- Candidates must have graduated with a minimum of Second Class lower having a CGPA not less than 3.0 points on a scale of 5- Points scale.
f Graduates of Medicine/Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science,
Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Physiology, Anatomy, Pathological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical engineering, Biotechnology, Engineering Medicine, Science Medicine, Nuclear Medicine and related disciplines; and other holders of PGD in Biochemistry with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 points on a scale of 5.0 points scale or its equivalent will be considered.
g. Candidate for the master’s programme in human physiology must possess a minimum of
Second-Class degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5-point scale or its equivalent in Human Physiology or related discipline from the Rivers State University or other universities recognized by statute of Rivers State University
- Holders of MBBS, DVM or BVM, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Optometry degrees, holders of post graduate diploma in Human Physiology with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.0 grade point scale or its equivalent.
- Candidate for the master’s programme in Nursing Science must possess a minimum of second class degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5.point scale or its equivalent in Nursing Science or related discipline, candidate must be registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) as a registered Nurse and have a current license to practice in Nigeria.
- Holders of Post graduate diploma in Nursing science with a minimum of CGPA of 3.50 on 5.0 grade point scale or its equivalent can apply.
xx. Candidates for the MLIS Degree in Library and Information Science must have the following:
- Good first Degree Honours in Library and Information Science with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division of Rivers State University or any other recognized University.
- Good first Degree Honours in other disciplines with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division plus a
Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science with a CGPA of 3.50
- A postgraduate diploma in Library and Information Science with a CGPA of 3.50 and above on 5 point grade addition to satisfying University matriculation requirements
C. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMMES
A candidate for a PhD programme shall:
- Possess a Master’s degree with a CGPA of 3.50 or above, on a five-point grade system, in a relevant discipline, obtained from the Rivers State University or any other recognized institution of higher learning of equivalent status.
- For a PhD degree in the Faculty of Education, candidates shall possess a Master’s degree in Education (with a CGPA OF 3.50 above, on a 5-point scale) in the relevant field of study obtained from Rivers State University or any other recognized institution of equivalent status.
- A candidate for Ph.D in English Language and Literature in English must possess the following:-
- A good Bachelor’s Degree (minimum CGPA of Second Class Lower) in English Language, English Education, Literary Studies or Linguistics/Mass Communication from a recognized university.
- Candidate must possess a good Master’s Degree in English Language, Literary Studies or Mass Communication from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.50 on a fivepoint scale.
- A candidate for PhD in French must possess the following:
i. A good Bachelor’s Degree (minimum CGPA of Second Class Lower) in French and English Language from a recognized university and a Master’s Degree in French from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.50 on a five-point scale.
- Candidates for the PhD programme in History and International Diplomacy must Possess:
i. A Bachelor’s Degree (minimum of Second Class Lower Division) in History and International
Diplomacy, History and International Studies, History and Diplomatic Studies, History and International Relations or History and Strategic Studies from approved and recognized
Universities, and a Master’s Degree in History and International Diplomacy, History and
International Studies, History and Diplomatic Studies, History and International Relations or History and Strategic Studies from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.50 on a five-point scale.
- Candidates for Ph D programme in Philosophy must possess the following
- Candidates must possess a good Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, not lower than a Second Class Lower Division, from a recognized university;
- Candidates must also possess a good Master’s degree in Philosophy from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.50 on a five-point scale.
- A candidate for PhD in Philosophy whose CGPA is less than 3.50 will be required to register for the MPhil/PhD programme. Such candidates must present two seminars and a research proposal for grading and must score a minimum CGPA of 3.50 before proceeding to the PhD programme otherwise the MPhil Degree would be awarded upon the submission of a dissertation and its examination, following the procedure for a PhD thesis.
- Candidates for PhD programme in Religious and Cultural Studies must possess the following:-
- MA Degree in Religious and Cultural Studies, Islamic Studies, Theology or other
related disciplines such as Philosophy, History, Sociology and Anthropology, on a CGPA of 3.50 points on a 5-point scale, from the Rivers State University or any other institution recognized by the Senate of Rivers State University, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree with Second Class Lower in any of the aforementioned areas
- Candidates with the MA degree in related disciplines such as Philosophy, History,
Sociology and Anthropology will be required to take all MA taught courses in Religious and
Cultural Studies and score at least a C grade to advance to the PhD iii. Candidates (from other universities) whose admission qualifications show deficiencies in the transcripts will be required to take some remedial courses from the courses available in the MA programme of the Department and score at least a C grade to advance to the PhD.
- A candidate for PhD in Theatre Arts must possess a good Master’s Degree
(minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale) in Theatre Arts from a recognized university in addition to a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
- A candidate for PhD in Estate Management with Master’s degree in other cognate
disciplines like Environmental Management will be required to take and pass
remedial courses as may be prescribed by the Department before proceeding with their research.
(j) A candidate for a PhD in Environmental Management and Control OR PhD in Disaster/Environmental Risk Management shall possess the following:-
- MSc degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 on a five-point scale or 60% weighted average in addition to a Bachlor’s degree in the relevant area as indicated in the MSc Programm with a minimum of Second Lower Division.
- Demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem solving potentials possibly through a selection process.
- All candidates whose MSc degrees are not in Environmental Management and Control or Disaster/Environmental Risk Management will be required to audit (undergo) prescribed core courses of a Master programme.
(k) Holders of Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees can only be considered for admission into the relevant Master of Science (MSc) programmes related to their first degrees.
- A Candidate for Ph D in Public Administration must have a Master’s degree with a CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or at least an average of B grade (60%) which includes course work and research dissertation from a recognized University.
- A Candidate for Ph D in Peace, Conflict and Security Studies must possess a good Master’s degree in Peace Studies in addition to a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class lower Division.
- A Candidate for Ph D in Economics must possess the following:-
- Possess the university minimum requirement for a B Sc degree in Economics
- Have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from an approved University whose Economics
programme is accredited by NUC, with a minimum of at least Second Class Lower degree in the discipline.
- Hold a Master degree in Economics with a CGPA of at least 3.5 on a 5.0 point scale.
(O). A candidate for Msc/PhD Programme in Management Sciencesmust possess the following: –
- Candidate should possess an MBA degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale in relevant area of Management Sciences Discipline from any recognized institution.
- Candidate with MSc Degree in relevant area of Management Sciences Discipline from any recognized university with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a 5-point scale from a recognized University.
- A candidate seeking admission into the Master’s degree programme must possess a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Lower Division in the relevant discipline.
- Holders of Second Class Bachelor’s Degree in Arts or Science or HND UPPER CREDIT DIVISION and above who have successfully completed a PGD or MBA degree in relevant discipline.
- Holders of third Class Degree in the relevant Disciplines of a relevant PGD with a CGPA of not less than 3.50
- A candidate for PhD Programme in Basic Medical Sciencesmust possess the following: –
- For PhD degree in anatomy candidate must possess MSc. Degree in anatomy from Rivers State University or other universities recognized by Rivers State University with a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a 5 points scale, candidates who obtained a CGPA below 3.50 would be eligible for M.Phil/PhD programme.
- For PhD in biochemistry candidates must possess M.Sc/M.Phil or its equivalent in Biochemistry in addition to other Faculty requirements. The candidates must have scores a minimum of 3.50 and above on a 5.0 points scale.
- A candidate for Ph.D programme in the department of Physiology must possess a bachelor degree of at least second class lower division in Physiology and related fields, as well as MSc degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5points scale.
- Candidate for the PhD Programme in Nursing Science must posses a master’s degree in Nursing with a minimum of 4.00 on a 5.0 point scale.
- A candidate with a Master’s degree in Nursing with CGPA of 3.5 on a 5. point scale can apply Master’s/PhD degree Programme.
- Candidates with professional Masters in Nursing with a CGPA of 3.5 on a 5. point scale can apply for Master’s/PhD programme.
- Candidates seeking admission for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Library and Information Science must have any of the following qualifications from this university or any recognized institution, in addition to satisfying University matriculation requirements:
a. Holder of Master degree in Library and Information Science discipline obtained from the Rivers State University or any other institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate, not less than 60 percent or a CGPA of 3.50 on a five point scale.
NOTE: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS for the Department of Maritime Science
Candidates should possess any of the following:
- M.Sc degree in Maritime or Transport related field for Ph.D with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA.
- Bachelor of Science Degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Lower Division.
- Candidates with 3rd Class degree should apply for PGD Maritime Transport or Shipping Management.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Transport, Geography, Urban & Regional Planning & Science, etc.
- Advanced Diploma or Masters Certificate in Maritime Engineering, Licenciate of Marine Surveyor or Ship Brokers.
- ACII – Insurance or International Advanced Diploma in Transport of CILT (UK).
- Candidates with MBA or MSc in other fields should apply.
NOTE; In addition to the conditions, a candidate may be required to present himself/herself for a selection test and /or oral interview.
2. DURATION OF PROGRAMMES
2.1 The full-time Postgraduate Diploma programmes run for two semesters (minimum) and four semesters (maximum) with or without project writing.
2.2 The full-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in Engineering runs for a duration of four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum) with project.
2.3 The full-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in Transport Planning runs for three semesters (minimum) and five semesters (maximum).
2.4 The part-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in Surveying and Geomatics runs for four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.5 The Part-Time PGD Programme shall run for a minimum of two (2) years of four (4) semesters. The maximum number of years is three (3) years of six semesters.
2.6 The full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science shall run for a minimum of two semester (one academic session) or a maximum of four semesters (two academic sessions).
2.7 The part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science shall run for a minimum of four semesters or a maximum of six semester
2.8. The full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Faculty of Basic Medical Science runs for a duration of four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum) with project.
2.9 The part-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in Faculty of Basic Medical Science runs for four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.10. The Part-Time PGD Programme shall run for a minimum of two (2) years of four (4) semesters. The maximum number of years is three (3) years of six semesters
2.11 The part-time Postgraduate Diploma programme in Maritime Transport shall run for 12 months
2.12 The full-time Master’s degree programme with dissertation is structured to last for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.
2.13 The full-time Master’s degree programme with dissertation in Faculty of Engineering is structured to last for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.
2.14 The full-time Master’s degree programme in Surveying and Geomatics runs for three semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.15 The part-time Master’s degree programme in Surveying and Geomatics runs for four semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum).
2.16 The full-time Master’s degree programme in Transport Planning and Logistics and Supply Chain Planning will run for four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.17 The full-time Master’s programme in Environmental Management and Control OR Disaster/Environmental Risk Management will run for three semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.18 The full-time Master’s degree (M Sc) in Environmental Management and Control OR Disaster/Environmental Risk Management will run for four semesters (minimum) and six semesters (maximum).
2.19 Full-time Master of Library and Information (MLIS) Degree Programme in Library and Information Science by course work and Dissertation shall run for a minimum of four (4) semesters and Maximum of six (6) semesters.
2.20 Part-time of Master of Library and Information Science Degree Programme in Library and Information Science by work and Dissertation shall run for a minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.
2.21 The full-time Master’s degree programme with dissertation in Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences to run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of six semesters.
2.22 The part-time Master’s degree programme in Faculty of Basic Medical
Sciences runs for six semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum).
2.23 The MSc/PhD Programme shall run for a minimum of four (4) years of eight (8) semesters. One year of two (2) Semesters MSc course work, Two years of four (4) Semesters of PhD course work and Seminars; and one year of two (2) semesters of thesis writing. The maximum number of years is six (6) years.
2.24 The Part-Time MSc Programme shall run for a minimum of three (3) years of six (6) semesters. Two years of four (4) Semesters of course work and one year of two (2) semesters of dissertation writing. The maximum number of years is four (4) years.
2.25 The LLM Programme shall run for a minimum of Three (3) years consisting of two (2) years course work of Four (4) Semesters and a dissertation in the 3rd year. The Maximum duration of this programme is Four (4) years of Eight (8) Semesters.
The MALD programme shall run for a minimum of Three (3) years consisting of two (2) years, of course work and a year of dissertation writing. The maximum shall be 5 years or 10 Semesters.
2.26 The part-time Master’s Degree in Maritime Shipping Management shall run for Minimum of 2 Years.
–The part-time Master’s Degree in Maritime Transport shall run for Minimum of 2 Years
2.27 The full–time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes with thesis runs for six semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum).
2.28 The part-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Surveying and Geomatics runs for eight semesters (minimum) and ten semesters (maximum).
2.29 The full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Environmental Management and Control OR Disaster/Environmental Risk Management will run for six semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum).
2.30 Part-time study, specifically to be undertaken at weekends only, is available for the programmes in Shipping Management and Maritime Transport Technology for six semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum).
2.31 Part-time study in Faculty of Engineering is available for PhD programmes only and runs for ten semesters (minimum) and twelve semesters (maximum).
2.32The full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree programme in Library and Information Science shall run for a minimum duration of Six (6) semesters and a maximum duration of eight (8) semesters.
2.33Part time programme shall run for a minimum duration of Eight (8) semesters and a maximum duration of ten (10) semesters.
2.34 The full–time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes with thesis in Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences runs for six semesters (minimum) and eight semesters (maximum)
2.35 The part-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences runs for eight semesters (minimum) and ten semesters (maximum).
2.36 The Part-Time PhD programme with an LLM shall run for a minimum period of Four (4) years of Eight (8) Semesters and a maximum period of six (6) years of twelve (12) Semesters. Two (2) years shall be for course work and Two (2) years for thesis writing.
2.37 The Part-Time PhD Programme in the Faculty of Management Sciences shall run for a minimum of four (4) years of eight (8) semesters. Two years of four (4) semesters of course work and two years of four (4) semesters of Seminars and thesis writing. The maximum number of years is six (6) years.
2.38 The part-time PhD Degree in Maritime Shipping Management shall run for Minimum of 4 Years
2.39 Unless otherwise stated, part-time studies in any Faculty, where it is available, will take twice the duration allowed for the corresponding full-time programmes. Such part-time PhD programmes will last for ten semesters (minimum) and twelve semesters (maximum).
2.33 The Sandwich Postgraduate Diploma (PGDE/PGDTE) programmes in Education run for a minimum duration of one Sandwich year and a maximum of two Sandwich years.
2.19 All Sandwich Master’s programmes (MEd/MSc) with dissertation in Education run for a minimum duration of two Sandwich years and a maximum of four Sandwich years.
2.20 All Sandwich Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes with thesis in Education run for a minimum duration of four Sandwich years and a maximum of six Sandwich years.
NOTE: A Sandwich Year includes long vacation, Christmas and Easter vacations.
3. MODE OF APPLICATION
Applications for admission to any postgraduate programme shall be made on-line by logging onto www.rsu.edu.ng and making an e-payment of Thirty Thousand Naira (N30,000.00) only, using interswitch verve – enabled cards. Application forms should be completed on-line, downloaded and hard copies submitted to the Secretary, Postgraduate School along with the following:
i) Photocopies of Certificates.
ii) Certified academic transcripts. (It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that copies of their academic transcripts are forwarded under confidential cover directly to The Secretary, Postgraduate School, Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt).
iii) Letter of reference from three referees, including one from a previous academic institution, stating that applicant is qualified to undertake advanced studies and research and that the Referee is confident that the applicant will benefit from the training.
For PhD applicants, brief research proposals on their intended areas of study should also accompany the application forms.
The deadline for submission of applications online and at the Postgraduate School is 31st March, 2022.
