  • How do you plan to support yourself while in school
  • What are your plans after you finish your study in the US

5. Prepare For Your Departure

Preparing for your departure is the next step after your student visa approval.

You need to know what to take to the US at this stage. You would also get information on travel regulations and health status certification.

    • Here are some more tips on obtaining scholarships for studying in the USA:

      1. Start early. The best time to start your scholarship search is as early as possible, ideally during your junior year of high school. This will give you plenty of time to research different scholarships, gather the required materials, and submit your applications.

      2. Be thorough in your research. There are many different types of scholarships available, so it’s important to do your research and find scholarships that are a good fit for you. Consider your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, financial need, and other factors when choosing scholarships to apply for.

      3. Tailor your applications to each scholarship. Don’t just send out the same generic application to every scholarship you apply for. Take the time to tailor your application to each scholarship by highlighting your unique qualifications and why you’re a good fit for the award.

      4. Get strong letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation can play a big role in your scholarship applications. Ask teachers, mentors, or other trusted adults to write letters of recommendation that highlight your academic achievements, character, and potential.

      5. Proofread your applications carefully. Before you submit your scholarship applications, be sure to proofread them carefully for any errors in grammar or spelling. A well-written and error-free application will make a good impression on the scholarship committee.

Obtaining a scholarship to study in the USA can be competitive, but it’s definitely possible. By following the tips above, you can increase your chances of winning a scholarship and making your dream of studying in the USA a reality.

      Good luck!

  2. Hello.. first I must say lovely guide to gaining admission in the USA..

Here is my question pls.. I studied pharmacy here in Nigeria and I have my BSC with the hope of continuing my studies in US with schools like Harvard and Stanford..

Do I necessarily need to write the English test like TOEFL?

    Reply
    • Yes, you will need to take the TOEFL or another English proficiency test if you want to study pharmacy at Harvard or Stanford. These schools require a minimum TOEFL score of 100 for international students. You can also take the IELTS, but the minimum score required is slightly lower, at 7.0.

The TOEFL and IELTS are standardized tests that measure your ability to use English in academic settings. They test your reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. The scores are valid for two years, so you will need to take the test within two years of applying to pharmacy school.

In addition to the TOEFL or IELTS, you will also need to submit your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. You may also be required to take the GRE or another standardized test.

The admissions process for pharmacy school is competitive, so it is important to start preparing early.

  4. Good day sir would I be admitted into any us University of law with my wace result like Harvard, Yale and other. How can I get scholarship schemes sir

    Reply
    • It is possible to be admitted into a US law school with your WAEC result, but it will be challenging. The top law schools in the US, such as Harvard and Yale, typically have very competitive admissions standards. They look for applicants with high LSAT scores, strong academic transcripts, and impressive letters of recommendation. Your WAEC result can be used to demonstrate your academic achievement, but it is important to have other strong factors in your application as well.

Here are some scholarship schemes that you can apply for:

      1. The Howard University International Law Scholarship is a full scholarship that is awarded to international students who are admitted to Howard University School of Law.

      2. The American Bar Association (ABA) Section of International Law and Practice International Legal Studies Scholarship is a scholarship that is awarded to international students who are enrolled in a law school in the United States.

      3. The International Legal Studies Scholarship from the American Society of International Law is a scholarship that is awarded to international students who are enrolled in a law school in the United States.

  5. Pls I wanna ask if it’s possible for me to pursue a Masters degree in US to study masters in either International relations or Diplomacy with a CGPA of 2.5 for international student

    Reply
    • It is possible to pursue a Master’s degree in International Relations or Diplomacy in the US with a CGPA of 2.5, but it will be challenging.

Most US universities require a minimum CGPA of 3.0 for international students, but there are a few that accept students with lower GPAs. You will need to research carefully and apply to schools that are known to be flexible with their admissions requirements.

In addition to your GPA, you will also need to demonstrate strong academic achievements in your undergraduate coursework, relevant work experience, and letters of recommendation. You may also need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or other standardized tests.

Here are some things you can do to improve your chances of getting admitted to a Master’s program in International Relations or Diplomacy with a low GPA:

      1. Choose a school that is known to be flexible with its admissions requirements.

      2. Target schools that are less competitive.

      3. Highlight your academic achievements in your application.

      4. Get strong letters of recommendation from professors or other professionals who can attest to your academic ability and potential.

      5. Take the GRE or other standardized tests and score well.

      6. Gain relevant work experience in the field of International Relations or Diplomacy.

If you are persistent and put in the effort, you can still get admitted to a Master’s program in International Relations or Diplomacy with a low GPA. However, it will take more work than if you had a higher GPA.

Here are some Canadian universities that accept low CGPA for Master’s in International Relations or Diplomacy:

      University of Regina
      King’s University College
      Camosun College
      Vancouver Community College
      Conestoga College
      Algonquin College
      Capilano University
      Georgian College
Humber College · Centennial College · University of the Fraser Valley
      Saint Thomas University
      Concordia University of Edmonton
      Vancouver Island University (Malaspina)
      Université Saint Paul
OCAD University (Ontario College of Art & Design)
      Kwantlen University College
      Bow Valley College
      Fanshawe College
      Northern Alberta Institute of Technology
Okanagan College · George Brown College
      Douglas College
      Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
      Algoma University
      Langara College
      Mohawk College

      I hope this helps!

  9. If you do not submit any English language test as part of your F1 visa application for USA in Nigeria , but you submit your bachelor degree certificate. Will your visa rejected ? I beleive all bachelor’s in nigeria are taught in english

    Reply
    • Whether or not your visa will be rejected if you do not submit an English language test as part of your F1 visa application for the USA in Nigeria depends on a few factors, including:

      1. The specific university you are applying to. Some universities may require an English language test regardless of whether you have a bachelor’s degree from Nigeria.

      2. The results of your bachelor’s degree. If you have a high GPA and good grades in English courses, the consular officer may be more likely to believe that you have the necessary English skills to succeed in your studies in the US.

      3. Your overall application. The consular officer will consider all aspects of your application, including your financial support, your ties to Nigeria, and your reasons for wanting to study in the US.

In general, it is always best to submit an English language test as part of your F1 visa application, even if you have a bachelor’s degree from Nigeria. This will help to demonstrate your English proficiency to the consular officer and increase your chances of approval.

Here are some of the English language tests that are accepted for F1 visa applications:

      1. IELTS
      2. TOEFL
      3. PTE Academic
      4. Duolingo English Test

  10. I’d like to ask that as a Nigerian undergraduate who got admitted into one of the universities in USA for the fall session 2023 and at this period still waiting for embassy appointment, will the admission be forfeited or can enrol for the college’s online class

    Reply
    • Whether your admission will be forfeited or not depends on the university’s policy on deferred admission. Some universities allow students to defer their admission for a year, while others do not. You should contact the admissions office of the university you have been admitted to to inquire about their policy.

If the university does allow deferred admission, you may be able to enroll in online classes for the fall semester. However, you should keep in mind that online classes may not be a good fit for everyone. They can be more challenging than in-person classes, and they may not offer the same level of interaction with professors and classmates.

If you are unable to defer your admission or enroll in online classes, you may want to consider taking a gap year. This would give you time to secure a visa appointment and prepare for your studies in the United States.

      • Pls is English language test compulsory for f1 visa in nigeria for master students ?what of if I submit only my bachelor certificate as prove of English ? Will my visa rejected

        Reply
        • Whether or not you need to submit an English language test as part of your F1 visa application for a master’s degree in Nigeria depends on the specific university you are applying to.

Some universities may require an English language test regardless of whether you have a bachelor’s degree from Nigeria. Others may accept your bachelor’s degree as proof of English proficiency, especially if you have a high GPA and good grades in English courses.

If you are unsure whether or not you need to submit an English language test, you should contact the university you are applying to. They will be able to tell you their specific requirements.

If you do not submit an English language test, you may still be able to get your visa approved if you can demonstrate your English proficiency in other ways. For example, you could submit letters from professors or employers who can attest to your English skills. You could also submit transcripts from English-language courses you have taken.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to accept your bachelor’s degree as proof of English proficiency will be up to the consular officer who interviews you. If you are concerned about your chances of approval, you should consider taking an English language test.

This will show the consular officer that you have the necessary English skills to succeed in your studies in the US.

  12. Hello Sir! I have name discrepancy between my certificate and passport. One is with two name and the other is with three names. Is there any chance for my visa to approve and what are the best way I can go about, to have my visa application approved.
    Thank you

    Reply
    • The chances of your visa being approved depend on the reason for the name discrepancy and the documentation you can provide to support your application.

If the name discrepancy is due to a clerical error, such as a typo, you should be able to provide a copy of your birth certificate or other official document that shows your correct name. You may also need to provide an explanation of the error, such as a letter from the passport office or the issuing agency.

If the name discrepancy is due to a change of name, such as a marriage or divorce, you will need to provide documentation of the change, such as a marriage certificate or a court order. You may also need to provide an explanation of the change, such as a letter from your lawyer or the issuing agency.

In some cases, the visa officer may require you to provide an affidavit explaining the name discrepancy. This is a sworn statement that explains the reason for the discrepancy and provides supporting documentation.

The best way to increase your chances of having your visa application approved is to provide as much documentation as possible to support your application. This includes copies of your official documents, such as your passport, birth certificate, and marriage certificate. You should also provide any other documentation that you believe is relevant to your application, such as a letter from your employer or school.

If you are still unsure about whether your visa application will be approved, you can contact the embassy or consulate of the country you are applying to for more information.

Here are some additional tips for applying for a visa with a name discrepancy:

      * Be prepared to explain the name discrepancy in detail.
      * Provide as much documentation as possible to support your application.
      * Be patient and understanding. The visa process can take some time.

      I hope this helps!

    • The specific admission requirements for studying law in the United States can vary between different universities and law schools.

However, most reputable institutions typically have certain requirements that must be met for admission, and English language proficiency is generally one of them.

While some universities may accept alternative English proficiency tests, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), it is unlikely that a NECO result alone would be sufficient to demonstrate English language proficiency for admission to a law program in the US.

    • Hello Jeremiah,

To further your education in the United States, the acceptance and transferability of your Nigerian Business Informatics OND (Ordinary National Diploma) result will depend on the policies of the specific educational institution you are applying to.

OND results are generally equivalent to an associate degree in the United States. Some universities or colleges may accept OND results as transfer credits toward a higher degree, while others may require additional coursework or assessments to determine the equivalency level.

    • Hello Onome,

If you have studied law outside of the United States and would like to practice law in the United States, there are several steps you will need to take.

First, you must obtain a law degree from a recognized institution in your home country or another country. Then, you must evaluate your credentials through a recognized credential evaluation service to determine if your degree is equivalent to a law degree from an accredited U.S. law school.

Next, you must pass the bar exam in the state where you wish to practice law. Each state has its bar exam, so you must research the requirements for the state where you want to practice.

You may also need to complete additional coursework or an apprenticeship to meet the specific requirements of the state bar association. Additionally, you may need to meet other conditions, such as passing a character and fitness evaluation and completing continuing education requirements to maintain your license.

Practising law in the United States requires significant time, effort, and money. Researching the requirements carefully and seeking guidance from experienced professionals is essential to ensure you are on the right path.

Most of the schools in the USA require TOEFL. But she should contact the school she is applying to for a waiver which is possible.

Depending on the school, you might need to write an entrance exam or do an online interview.

          • Hi, i am Sadiq Tanko Abdulrahman by name, I hail from Kano state, Nigeria. Please sir/ma’am, i will like to request your help choosing the cheapest and best university in the USA, specifically in Atlanta. I have read your blog about the requirements earlier and i think i need more explanation regarding theD-160, I-20 and the I-901 SEVIS fee. Thank you.

          • Hello Sadiq Tanko Abdulrahman,

Thank you for reaching out. When it comes to choosing a university in the USA, the “cheapest” and “best” criteria can vary based on individual preferences and circumstances. However, I can provide you with some general information to help you make an informed decision.

In Atlanta, Georgia, there are several universities that offer a wide range of programs and have varying tuition fees. Some universities in Atlanta include Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, and Clark Atlanta University, among others. It is important to research these institutions, their programs, and their respective tuition fees to determine which one aligns with your academic and financial goals.

Regarding the D-160, I-20, and the I-901 SEVIS fee, here’s a brief explanation of each:

            1. Form D-160 (Nonimmigrant Visa Application): The Form D-160 is an online application form that must be completed by individuals seeking a nonimmigrant visa to enter the United States. It is used for various visa categories, including student visas (F-1 or M-1 visas) for studying in the USA. The form collects personal and background information necessary for visa processing.

            2. Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status): The Form I-20 is a document issued by a U.S. educational institution to accepted international students. It verifies that you have been admitted to a specific institution, have met the necessary requirements, and demonstrates that you have sufficient funds to cover your educational and living expenses. The Form I-20 is required when applying for a student visa.

            3. I-901 SEVIS Fee: The I-901 SEVIS fee is a mandatory fee that international students must pay before their visa interview or applying for a change of status to F or M student visa. SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, which is a database that tracks and monitors international students studying in the USA. The fee helps fund the SEVIS program.
