Public Health Technician

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities.

This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases.

Overall, public health is concerned with protecting the health of entire populations. These populations can be as small as a local neighborhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world

Admission Requirements

  • WASCE/NECO/SSCE 5 Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry at not more than two sittings PLUS either ii, iii or iv below:
  • Registered Nursing (RN) certificate.
  • BNSC candidates from Universities accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria .
  • BNSC candidates from Universities outside Nigeria with evidence of verification of certificates and license by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

Duration: Two (2) years (Four semesters), except candidates with BNSc (one year – two semesters)

Environmental Health Technology

Environmental health is the branch of public health concerned with all aspects of the natural and built environment affecting human health.

In order to effectively control factors that may affect health, the requirements that must be met in order to create a healthy environment must be determined.

Environmental health focuses on the natural and built environments for the benefit of human health.

Environmental Health Technician

An environmental health technician is someone who works in the public sector to identify and correct various environmental health issues.

They examine the environment and its impact on the population, determine what issues may exist within it, and then work to find a way to combat those problems.

Pharmacy Health Technician

Pharmacy technicians are medical professionals who work alongside pharmacists to help and support patients and make sure they get the best care.

Pharmacy technicians can work in places like;

  • Community (retail) pharmacies
  • Hospital pharmacies
  • Pharmaceutical production or sales in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Prisons; and primary care, education, military, or veterinary practices.

Health Information Management

Health IT (health information technology) is the area of IT involving the design, development, creation, use and maintenance of information systems for the healthcare industry.

Automated and interoperable healthcare information systems will continue to improve medical care and public health, lower costs, increase efficiency, reduce errors and improve patient satisfaction, while also optimizing reimbursement for ambulatory and inpatient healthcare providers.

Community Health Extension

The Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) is a member of the health team for Primary Health Care (PHC).

The Community Health Extension Worker will spend 50% of his time in the clinic.

He or she has the responsibility of supervising the Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEW), the Community Health Extension Worker in training, the Volunteer Village Health Workers and the Traditional Birth Attendants.

He or she is to be supervised by the Community Health Officer (CHO).

Junior Community Health Extension

The Junior Community Health Extension Worker is a member of the District Health team working, directly with the Village Health workers/Traditional Birth Attendants.

He/she is employed by the formal Health system and she is expected to Spend 80% of his/her working tine in the community and 20% in the clinic.

He/she is supervised directly by the community Health Extension workers.

Nutrition and Dietetics

Nutrition and Dietetics, a subdiscipline of Medicine, is the science that focuses on everything related to food and its effect on our health and overall wellbeing.

Nutritionists and dietitians aim to improve people’s health and help them make better dietary choices.

Duration: 2 years (Four semesters), except candidates with BNSc (one year – two semesters)

Food Hygiene

Food hygiene is a collection of practices and guidelines to keep your operations clean and under healthy conditions. This term is concerned with food handling, transport, proper storage of food, and the actual processing of your materials.

Specifically, the aims of food hygiene include the following:

  • To prevent food from spoiling due to contamination as a result of unclean environmental conditions, poor food hygiene practices, and lack of orientation on food safety.
  • To orient and educate people involved in the processing of your product on how to practice safe food handling and sanitary practices.
  • To extend the shelf-life of your product through clean processing.
  • To prevent releasing unsafe food to the market that can result in foodborne illnesses.

Medical Laboratory Technician

Medical laboratory technicians play a vital role in the effective diagnosis and treatment of patients.

You are expected to collect samples and perform tests to support doctors and other medical professionals as they detect diseases and treat patients.

Dental Surgery Technician

A dental technologist (dental laboratory technician) is a member of the dental team who, upon prescription from a dental clinician, constructs custom-made restorative and dental appliances.

Dental Health Therapy

A dental therapist is a member of the dental team who provides preventive and restorative dental care for children and adults.

The precise role varies and is dependent on the therapist’s education and the various dental regulations and guidelines of each country.

A dental therapist is a licensed professional oral health educator; a clinical operator who uses preventive therapeutic care with a group or individual that attends with oral diseases and helps maintain good or better oral health care.

Medical Imaging Science

Medical imaging is the science of creating images of human tissue, bones, organs and vessels using equipment ranging from X-ray machines to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and molecular imaging.

Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine.

This is evident throughout healthcare, from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and has entered the public conscience though the proliferation of implantable medical devices, such as pacemakers and artificial hips, to more futuristic technologies such as stem cell engineering and the 3-D printing of biological organs..

Paramedics Science

Paramedics are highly trained medical practitioners, who make life-saving decisions under pressure, but also put patients and their families at ease during difficult situations.

Combining social skills with vast medical knowledge is a unique ability, and one that paramedic science students master during their degree.

Admission Requirements

Admission forms are obtainable online at the College portal wih payment of non-refundable fee of ₦‎2,000.

Completed on-line Application form print-out is to be returned to the Admission office with the following:

  • Birth Certificate
  • School Certificate/Result (WASC/GCE/SSCE/NECO)
  • JAMB (UTME) Result Slip (for those who wrote JAMB Exams)
  • Two recent passport photographs (Red background only)
  • Local Government Area of Origin / Letter of Identification
