        • In the presence of water, sulfur (IV) oxide (SO2) can act as a reducing agent by forming sulfurous acid (H2SO3), which can donate electrons to other compounds.

          The reaction between SO2 and water can be represented as:

          SO2 + H2O → H2SO3

          In this reaction, SO2 is oxidized from its zero oxidation state to a +4 oxidation state, while water is reduced to form H2SO3. Sulfurous acid can then donate electrons to other compounds, reducing them in the process.

          For example, if sulfurous acid is added to a solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4), the KMnO4 will be reduced to manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2), and sulfur dioxide will be oxidized to sulfuric acid (H2SO4).

          2 KMnO4 + 5 H2SO3 → K2SO4 + 2 MnO2 + 5 H2O + 2 SO4

          Overall, the reducing ability of SO2 in the presence of water is due to the formation of sulfurous acid, which can donate electrons to other compounds and undergo oxidation itself.
