Entry Requirements for Nigerian Students

We encourage Nigerian students to apply for the super priority visa (SPV) service due to the recent instability of the Nigerian Naira. The SPV service provides a fast track service for Nigerian students applying for either a visit visa or a Student Route visa. 

Undergraduate

To be considered for entry into our undergraduate programmes you need to hold any of the following: an Ordinary National Diploma (OND); Higher National Diploma (HND); a recognised foundation from Nigeria; successful completion of Year 1 bachelor degree from a Nigerian University.

Applicants who have also completed the NCUK International Foundation year can also be considered.

Postgraudate

Applicants should hold a 4-year bachelor’s degree from a reputable and recognised university from Nigeria with a minimum second class lower (2:2) degree classification.

Applicants with a medical degree can also be considered.  

English Requirements

If you have a WAEC or NECO in the English language with at least a C6, you shouldn’t require an English test to study for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Students who want to study a foundation programme will require a UKVI IELTS.

University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK and part of the Russell Group of leading universities.

Undergraduate

Qualifications we accept for undergraduate study

Applicants will be required to complete a foundation programme, such as the University of Leeds International Foundation Year, or other level 3 qualifications

English Language minimum for undergraduate study

IELTS 6.0 overall, GCSE C or equivalent qualification is required: Acceptable Language Qualifications.

Applicants who have studied in Nigeria for at least two years to complete an undergraduate degree or one year to complete a Masters’s degree, where the medium of instruction was English, are not required to undertake further English language tests.

Entry requirements for students from Nigeria

If you’re joining us from Nigeria, the entry requirements you need to meet will depend on the course you want to study.

We consider all applications we receive. However, to make sure you get the most out of your time studying with us and have the best chance of applying successfully, we recommend the following minimum qualifications:

Foundation courses

If you’ve achieved 5 WAEC/NECO subjects (including mathematics and English language) with minimum grades of 1-6 or A-D, you’ll usually need to do a foundation year before doing an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor’s degree.

Our foundation courses are provided at our associated college International College Portsmouth (ICP).

Undergraduate courses

Once you’ve completed a foundation course, we’ll consider you for admission onto an undergraduate course such as a Bachelor’s degree.

You can also apply with:

A levels
  • Please check your specific course page to find the exact number of points needed. Your A level grades should equal or exceed the total points required. You can use the UCAS Tariff Calculator to work out your total points.
  • Some courses will require you to have studied specific subjects at A level. For example, to study a science course you will usually need to have achieved passing grades in scientific subjects at A level.
  • A level points: A* = 56 A = 48 B = 40 C = 32 D = 24.
International Baccalaureate
  • Most courses will require between 24 and 31 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB), depending on the degree you apply for.

You must have studied relevant subjects and achieved strong grades.

Advanced Diplomas from APTECH/NCC and Informatics

If you have completed ADSE (APTECH) with credit or achieved a GPA of 2.0 (NCC/Informatics), you may be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Computing
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Digital Image
  • BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems
  • BSc (Hons) Web Technologies
  • BSc (Hons) Computing and Society

If you achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 or above at ADSE, you can be considered for final year (top-up) entry onto the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science
  • BSc (Hons) Software Engineering
  • BSc (Hons) Forensic Computing

Postgraduate courses

For entry to our postgraduate Master’s programmes, you’ll usually need to have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Higher Education institution:

  • 2:1 is equivalent to GPA of 3.5/5.0 (60-69%)
  • 2:2 is equivalent to GPA of 3.0/5.0 (50-59%) 

Although some courses may require a higher overall CGPA, we are also happy to consider applications with a slightly lower GPA on an individual basis.

If you don’t meet the postgraduate entry requirements, you can do a pre-Master’s programme at International College Portsmouth (ICP) for many of our courses.

PhDs

We’ll consider you for a PhD if you have a good Master’s degree and submit a research proposal.

English language requirements

When you join us, it’s important that you can speak and understand English to the level that your course requires. The specific English language requirements will be on your chosen course page. We accept a Grade C6 or above in English on the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), IELTS, IGCSE and several other certificates, but don’t worry if you’re currently short of the standard required – we offer English Language Programmes that will get you to the necessary level.

University of Birmingham

The University has a number of links with Nigerian universities, schools and sponsors. It is home to the prestigious Centre of West African Studies, the only university department in the world to concentrate specifically on West Africa. The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University’s general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.  

Please note: If you have taken exams that are from another country’s national education system (eg SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country-specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. If you are unsure about the acceptability of your qualifications for entry to Birmingham please contact us for further details.

English Language

You will need to demonstrate a certain level of English language, either through an English test such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, or we may be able to accept your previous or alternative qualifications as evidence. Please view the entry requirements for specific programme requirements and details on our presessional English language courses.

For a study on our Foundation and Undergraduate programmes, English language at grade C or above (or in numerical terms, grade 6 or above) in the WAEC SSCE is sufficient to meet the standard English language requirements.

For Postgraduate programmes, Nigerian nationals with a degree from Nigeria or another English speaking country (as on the University’s approved list) are not required to submit an English Language test.

Foundation Pathways

WAEC Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with at least 5 subjects at grade B3, to include grade B3 in Mathematics for our Engineering and Physical Sciences pathway.

NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) can also be accepted with at least 5 subjects at grade B3 or the joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) with 300+ points and at least 5 subjects at grade C4 to include grade B in Maths for our EPS pathway.

If you have achieved the English Language at grade C6, you will not be required to take an additional English proficiency test (for the 4-year programme).

Undergraduate

The University will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or a suitable foundation programme, such as one of our Foundation Pathways, for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

The University has a number of agreements with foundation providers in Nigeria which allows students to be considered for admission to undergraduate programmes. Please contact us for more information.

Students who have completed the first year of a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution in Nigeria with excellent grades (2.1, 3.0/4.0, 3.5/5.0) will be considered for entrance to undergraduate programmes (first year entry).

Postgraduate Taught

Students who hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 4 years and/or level 400) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters’s degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes to require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0

Students who have completed a Masters’s degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

University of Nottingham

Foundation Courses

For year 12 students taking the Senior School Certificate (SSC) through the WAEC (West African Examinations Council), we usually look for a minimum of three grade Bs and two Cs. The Bs should also be in relevant subjects.

For the Engineering foundation programme, relevant subjects are maths and physics. For the Science foundation programme, relevant subjects are maths and a science subject (biology or chemistry). Maths is required for Social Sciences and Business.

For most other foundation programmes, relevant subjects are English and Maths. Other relatively strong subjects, e.g. Business and Law, may also be taken into consideration.

  • Business, Law and Social Sciences, taught at the University of Nottingham International College
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences, taught in our Faculty of Engineering
  • Science, taught at the University of Nottingham International College. Either biology or chemistry depending on the progression route
Undergraduate

Our Undergraduate Prospectus lists entry requirements for A levels and International Baccalaureate students for each course.

If you have completed the standard year 12 examinations (SSC/WAEC) you must complete a foundation course for entry to our undergraduate programmes. We also accept foundation certificates from selected providers in the UK and Nigeria.

If you have taken the HND, we can typically accept grades ranging:  

  • From 3.0 to 4.0 for Grading Scale out of 4 (nb Vocational and comparable to UK BTEC / SQA Higher National Diploma (HND) standard / Foundation degree standard)
  • From 3.5 to 5 for Grading Scale out of 5 

This summary is provided as guidance and requirements may vary for individual courses.

Students who have completed at least one year at a university in Nigeria and achieved good grades may be considered for direct entry to our undergraduate degree courses.

We can accept WAEC or iGCSE English language qualification at grade C or above as meeting our English language requirements.

Students taking APs or SATs should refer to our entry requirements for the USA.

Masters

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree of a good standard from a recognised university, usually in a relevant subject area. Check course details in our postgraduate course pages to see whether your chosen course requires the equivalent of an Upper Second Class (2:1) or Lower Second Class (2:2) degree.

Our entry requirements for degrees from Nigerian universities vary depending on the university where you have studied and the course you are applying for at Nottingham. The summary below is provided as guidance but requirements may vary for individual courses and we do require higher grades from some universities.
