Academic entry requirements

We require successful completion of West African Examinations Certificate (with five subject passes at C6 or above) and successful completion of a recognised foundation course.

Students are not required to provide an English Certificate if they achieve a score of C6 in the English Language subject of the West African Examinations Certificate (WAEC).

University of Cumbria

The University of Cumbria was formed in 2007 by the merger of St Martin’s College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts and University of Central Lancashire’s Cumbria sites, operating from campuses spread across Cumbria and North Lancashire. Second Class Degree with a CGPA of 2.7 Applicants with 3rd class degrees from a recognized Nigerian university are welcome to apply for Post Graduate courses if they meet the following criteria: 

1. A minimum of 3 years full time relevant work experience after National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) or
2. Further professional qualification and 2 years post NYSC.

When you have met all the conditions of entry for a full-time course at Solent University (including payment of deposit and course acceptance), you will be sent a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) number. You will need this document to apply for a student visa.

The University extends a warm welcome to students from Nigeria. Nigeria accounts for the second largest amount of new international students at the University.

There are over 220 Nigerian students at the University following undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a range of subjects.

Entry Requirements

The following information is for guidance only and should be used together with the University’s general entrance requirements and any specific degree programme requirements.  

Please note: If you have taken exams which are from another country’s national education system (eg SAT and AP exams from the USA) you should consult the country specific section for that country for qualification equivalence information. English Language

You will need to demonstrate a certain level of English language, either through an English test such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, or we may be able to accept your previous or alternative qualifications as evidence. Please view the entry requirements for specific programme requirements, and details on our presessional English language courses.

For study on our Foundation and Undergraduate programmes, English language at grade C or above (or in numerical terms, grade 6 or above) in the WAEC SSCE is sufficient to meet the standard English language requirements.

For Postgraduate programmes, Nigerian nationals with a degree from Nigeria or another English speaking country (as on the University’s approved list) are not required to submit an English Language test.

Foundation Pathways

WAEC Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with at least 5 subjects at grade B3, to include grade B3 in Mathematics for our Engineering and Physical Sciences pathway.

NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) can also be accepted with at least 5 subjects at grade B3 or the joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) with 300+ points and at least 5 subjects at grade C4 to include grade B in Maths for our EPS pathway.

If you have achieved English Language at grade C6, you will not be required to take an additional English proficiency test (for the 4-year programme).

Undergraduate

The University will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations, the International Baccalaureate (IB), or a suitable foundation programme, such as one of our Foundation Pathways, for entrance to undergraduate programmes.

Students who have completed the first year of a 4-year Bachelor degree from a recognised institution in Nigeria with excellent grades (2.1, 3.0/4.0, 3.5/5.0) will be considered for entrance to undergraduate programmes (first year entry).

Students who hold a Bachelor degree (minimum 4 years and/or level 400) from a recognised institution will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.  Most taught Masters programmes require a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1) with a minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 or 3.5/5.0

Students who have completed a Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study.

For some courses, a good 2:2 bachelor’s degree may be acceptable. 

Postgraduate research 

A master’s degree from a good university will allow access to an MPhil or PhD. 

Postgraduate research degrees are individually supervised and we strongly recommend that prospective applicants make initial enquiries with the potential supervisor or School before submitting a formal application. 

A research proposal might be required along with your formal application. Please check with the School to which you wish to apply. 

English language requirements 

All international students coming to study in the UK on a Tier 4 visa/Student Route visa are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English language. The minimum English language requirements for each programme are specified in the course description. 

We accept a range of global English tests (for example IELTS, TOEFL iBT). In addition, we can usually accept a high score in English in WAEC exams (if taken within the last seven years). The minimum grade requirement is B3 or B2 depending on the requirement of the course.

Undergraduate entry requirements

To be considered for a place on one of our undergraduate (bachelors) degrees, you will need:

High grades in UK A levels

Between 28 and 38 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB)

A recognised foundation year programme

 Postgraduate entry requirements

Masters programmes	Bachelors degree awarded by a recognised Nigerian university or an equivalent professional qualification approved by the University UK 1st equivalent: GPA 4.5 UK 2:1 equivalent: GPA 3.5 – 3.2 depending on awarding institution.
PhD programmes	Good grades in bachelors and masters degrees awarded by a recognised university, and a strong research proposal.

English language entry requirements

You will need to be able to demonstrate the required level of English language proficiency. We require a letter from the student’s previous institution to confirm they teach in English combined with the student having achieved at least West African Examination Council (WAEC), West African Secondary School Certificate with English Grade C6 or above.

• For entry onto Undergraduate courses West African GCE A levels OND or equivalent are required.
• The University’s International Foundation Year provides a direct path to a wide range of undergraduate degrees.
• For entry onto Postgraduate courses a Bachelor degree is required.

International pathway programmes

If you are an international student who does not meet the entry requirements you can apply for a pathway programme at the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre.

Upon successful completion, students can progress to an undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University of Huddersfield.

University of Glasgow

Postgraduate Entry Requirements

We will consider applications to Masters degrees from graduates holding an upper second class honours degree from a national university. In some cases we may consider a lower second class honours degree for entry.

Postgraduate English Language Requirements

The University will waive the requirement to sit an English language test to applicants who meet the following requirements:

• WAEC English at Grade C6 or higher

and

• Upload an 2019 English Language Test Waiver form completed by their graduating university
