IELTS Exam

The IELTS exam has four categories which test the candidate’s listening, speaking, writing and reading skills.
Hence, you would need to study hard for each section separately if you desire to get a high score.
There are two main types of IELTS exams:

IELTS Academic is for international students who want to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level in a university abroad.
The IELTS General Training tests candidates who want to travel abroad to work or at a below degree level.

IELTS Test Scores
Candidates are graded from band 1-9 on each category of the IELTS.

Band 7

Band 6

The person understands the language somewhat, especially in normal circumstances.
Band 5
Band 5 means the candidate is a modest user and has partial command of the English language and may make several mistakes while using the language.
The person can only communicate on a fundamental level.
Band 4
Band 4 means the candidate is limited use of the English language and cannot understand and express himself in the language.
Such a person is prone to make many mistakes and cannot use complex language.
Band 3
Band 3 means the candidate is of minimal use and can only communicate general meanings in ordinary circumstances.
Such a person is prone to various communication errors.
Band 2
Band 2 means the candidate is an intermittent user and cannot easily communicate in English.
They only know a few words and phrases and use them when needed and in ordinary circumstances.
Such a person finds it difficult to read, speak or write fluently.
Band 1
The candidate is a non-user and has great difficulty using the language.
Band 0
The candidate did not attempt the test.
IELTS Exam Fees in Nigeria
The cost of the IELTS exam depends on which test you are taking. The following are the fees for each IELTS test in Nigeria:
- IELTS Academic = ₦83,000
- IELTS General Training = ₦83,000
- IELTS Academic for UKVI = ₦89,500
- IELTS General Training for UKVI = ₦89,500
IELTS Registration in Nigeria
You can register for the IELTS exam on the British council website.
You can register online in the following steps:
- Choose the test that is suitable for you
- Choose the country (Nigeria) and the location nearest to you.
- Choose the test date and make sure you will be available on that date. You would need to pick a different date for your speaking test.
- Register and create an account with the British Council and pay the relevant fees.
You can also register for the test physically at the test centre. You can register physically in the following steps:
- Download the IELTS application form online, print it out and fill it out.
- Find and visit the nearest approved test centre.
- Register for the IELTS test at the test centre.
Please note that you need to be 16 years or older to be eligible for the test.
If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must book the test.
You need to provide a means of identification, which must be a valid international passport in this case.
You may provide your contact address or indicate your prospective university if you want your results to be sent to them directly.

Take a Mock Exam
You can take an IELTS mock exam with the same exam conditions as the primary test.
You can also create an IELTS exam on your own and build your speed.
It is recommended that you look for a quiet environment, get your pen and book and a timer to the time you take your mock home test.
Make sure to avoid distractions and picture yourself in the exam hall.
Learn From Your Mistakes
After taking the exam, score yourself and note your scores.
Observe where you made errors and work on those areas.
After improving your weak areas, practice and repeat the process until you have mastered the test well.
Eat Well and Rest Well Before the Test Day
It cannot be overemphasized in your preparation for your exam.

IELTS Result Validity
After you have taken the exam, you will get your results within 5-7 days.
