10 Tips on How to Prepare and Pass UNILAG Post UTME Exam

Congratulations!

You have successful aced your Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) and are now on the threshold of attempting the notorious Post UTME to gain admission into the prestigious University as your first choice.

Though daunting as this task may seem, there are tips and secrets to success in this endeavour.

I remember a student who wrote POST UTME exam for UNILAG in 2018.

Back then, she was fresh out of high school and naive. She struggled with her irregular study routine, which was difficult.

She had no idea what she should be reading at the time.

Sadly, her score was low, and she lost the admission.

Guess what. That student was me!

The following year, I applied for admission with UNILAG as my choice of institution.

However, this time I was armed with a wealth of information.

As a result, I gained admission into the University of Lagos to study Law. I couldn’t have done it without the tips and guidelines I will share.

UNILAG Post UTME Format

The University of Lagos issues admissions based on the applicant’s aggregate score.

The format used is

So to pass is based on your SSCE results, UTME marks and Post UTME grades.

A candidate should already have a high score in the UTME.

However, Post UTME is also a vital per cent of the overall score.

Furthermore, candidates who ace the UTME but cannot pass the POST UTME will not be considered for admissions.

UNILAG Post UTME Subject Combination

UNILAG Post UTME is a computer-based exam on three main subjects:

Post UTME Questions

The UNILAG Post UTME examination is forty (40) questions for thirty (30) minutes.

The general paper section revolves mainly around information on UNILAG itself.

Examples include the type of institution – a public research university, the name of the current VC – Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, when the institution was established – in 1962, its motto: ‘Indeed and truth’ and so on.

The general paper includes current affairs or news such as a general election or existing political office holders.

Note that a few questions could be related to the subjects taken in your UTME.

For example, a question or two could feature Biology, Literature in English or Chemistry, so ensure to revise your two main subjects chosen in UTME as well.

How to Pass UNILAG Post UTME Exam

Have no fear because I am here to disclose ten (10) steps that, when followed closely, will lead you to success in your UNILAG Post UTME and become a great Akokite.

The following are tips to prepare and pass the UNILAG Post UTME exams;

  1. Have a Strongly Success-oriented Mentality
  2. Early Preparation
  3. Use the UNILAG Post UTME Past Questions
  4. Maximize Speed
  5. Watch the News
  6. Visit UNILAG Campuses
  7. Attend Post UTME Tutorials
  8. Join a Social Media Platform
  9. Eat a Light Meal the Night Before and Sleep Well
  10. Be Punctual

Have a Strongly Success-oriented Mentality

“The power to succeed starts from the mind.”

It indicates that the first step to success in your Post UTME is a prepared mind to win.

Feed your mind with that high target score you desire to achieve.

Motivate yourself continuously, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Early Preparation

A student with a laptop

Alexander Graham Bell once said, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success“.

His words emphasize the need for prompt preparation. I recommend that you begin to study as soon as you know you will be writing the Post UTME.

Delays are dangerous and, in this case, could cost you your admission. Consistency is key.

Study regularly and consistently right up to the exam day.

It will also help you feel much calmer and more prepared to conquer.

Use the UNILAG Post UTME Past Questions

Surveys have shown that 30% of questions featured in the UNILAG Post UTME exams are repeated annually.

Here lies the significance of the Past question.

Past questions can also reveal the format employed by the institution to ask questions.

You can purchase a hard copy of The UNILAG Post UTME past and practice questions and answers from the UNILAG Bookshop on the University of Lagos Main Campus at Akoka.

Also available are numerous apps and software available online.

Maximize Speed

revise post utme question

Many students do not realize that only hard work does not lead to success in the Post UTME exercise.

One significant factor and largely unknown factor is timing.

The ability to work quickly within allocated time cannot be overemphasized.

As mentioned earlier, the UNILAG Post UTME lasts thirty (30) minutes.

I can hear you asking, “30 minutes for 40 questions? That’s impossible!”

But I’m here to tell you that it’s not.

Practising ahead using a timer can be a big help; attempting past questions while trying to stick to 30 minutes and gradually, you will be well adjusted to the limited time frame.

Watch the News

stay informed on jamb news

In other words, listen to the news.

Know the name of that minister of education and recent happenings in Enugu.

Stay up-to-date with election preparations and know the latest in the education sector. Please, put away the Nollywood and Bollywood for now and become almost obsessed with the news.

It will help significantly in the general paper section of the Post UTME exam.

Visit UNILAG Campuses

I remember the first time I visited the UNILAG campus.

I was walking through the giant campus gates, climbing the library steps, sitting at the outdoor café at Moremi, chilling at the lagoon front and even going up in the elevator at the Faculty of Arts.

All these experiences made me more determined than ever to pass my Post UTME and become an Akokite.

If possible, take a day to visit this noble institution.

Shop at the bookshop, tour the lagoon, enjoy some Korede spag and breathe it all in. It will strengthen your motivation to succeed.

Attend Post UTME Tutorials

Tutorials are a great way to pass the UNILAG Post UTME.

They are taught by people who are up to date on happenings in the school.

Many of these tutors have years of experience and can give one-on-one instructions tailored toward success in your Post UTME.

Furthermore, you will meet and interact with students like you and build long-term friendships.

Numerous tutorials just outside both campus gates can cater to your success. If possible, check out one or two before deciding which to choose.

Join a Social Media Platform

We live in a social media age where information is more available than ever.

So don’t be left behind.

Join social media groups created for Post UTME candidates.

You will be kept up-to-date on the latest and will get answers to any questions you might have on registration processes.

It also provides the platform to interact with your peers about the exam.

Eat a Light Meal the Night Before and Sleep Well

man lying on a couch

Experts say that the best thing a candidate can do the night before an exam is to eat a light meal and have a good night’s rest.

Both habits will help you feel refreshed the next day and ready to take on the exam.

Last-minute overnight reading or praying could destabilize you and jeopardize your exam.

Reading and prayer should have been your regular and consistent Program during your preparation time.

So relax, eat light and rest early. Your body and brain will thank you for it.

Be Punctual

One final tip to note – be punctual! UNILAG has a high level of discipline. Lateness to your examination centre is strictly unacceptable.

You should get to the exam centre at least 1 or 2 hours before the scheduled time.

You will agree that gaining admission into the University of Lagos is admirable.

I can assure you that if you strictly adhere to these ten (10) tips, success will be yours.
